Accident at work

Employer’s duties

An employer has a duty under the UK law to ensure your health, safety and welfare at work, to provide safe working conditions and minimise health risks.
The employer’s duties under the law include:

  • controlling dust, smoke and noise emissions to the environment;
  • providing necessary training and instructions on safe behaviour, not to engage in improper behaviour that will endanger themselves and others;
  • ensuring safety and regular maintenance of equipment and machinery, as well as the safety of the systems used in the workplace;
  • assessing the risk of all tasks and reducing or eliminating the risks;
  • taking necessary fire-fighting measures and preparing a fire emergency evacuation plan or fire-fighting measures;
  • providing adequate first aid facilities or equipment;
  • reporting of diseases and injuries to relevant authorities.

The employee’s duties

You must cooperate with your employer to ensure workplace safety. You should take reasonable care of your own and your co-workers’ health and safety.
You must:

  1. follow instructions and observe safety rules and regulations;
  2. wear and properly use protective equipment;
  3. keep the workplace clean and tidy;
  4. use suitable tools and equipment for work;
  5. adhere to safety rules and safety signs.

Employee’s duties in reporting an accident

  • Report an accident to the supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Record the accident in Accident Book.
  • Collect the evidence, details of witnesses and photographs of the accident scene, if possible.
